Where did I leave off?
Let's see...
February 14 - Dr. visit #1 - Well-check for Matty - great!
February 20 - Dr. visit #2 - Matthew has a horrible double ear infection; begin antibiotics
February 28 - Dr. visit #3 - Matthew's ears were improving but now he has RSV; breathing sounds like a percolator; Peter sent home from school with a fever
March 1 - Dr. visit #4 - Davis's 3 year old check-up went beautifully; Peter diagnosed with the flu; Matthew's ears have deteriorated since yesterday; begin long course of antibiotics
{Miss a birthday party, swimming lesson, church, Noshville, etc. over the weekend}
March 4 - Peter still has a high fever; Matthew sounds crackly but in better spirits
March 5 - Same as yesterday, only I'm packing up for a road trip to SC
March 6 - arrive in Hilton Head, SC - Peter is rallying and Matthew seems to feeling much better
March 8 - Hayes goes down with the stomach bug
March 9 - We all (except for Hayes) celebrate Pop Kennedy's 90th birthday
March 10 - Davis wakes up with the stomach bug; travel home to Nashville
March 12 - Peter wakes up with the stomach bug; Davis has a repeat episode
Last week, Peter's fever persisted so he missed school Monday and Tuesday. Fortunately he makes a great patient and never missed an opportunity to compliment me or show off his manners. Matthew began a long course of antibiotics to knock out this ear infection once and for all. Meanwhile, I was preparing for our road trip to South Carolina for Pop's 90th birthday. Peter had clearly turned a corner and it seemed Matty was on his way as well.
We traveled to Birmingham Tuesday night and picked up Reenie before heading to Hilton Head Island on Wednesday, Hayes's birthday. Yes, I am such a good wife that I handed the birthday boy my keys and had him drive 9 hours. Believe it or not, he'd prefer it to my role on road trips: referee/milkmaid/deejay/storyteller/question-answerer extraordinaire. We finally arrived in beautiful Hilton Head with three happy boys and settled in for a birthday dinner with the birthday honorees (Hayes and Pop) and the island based aunts. (sigh)
It started ideally enough. Mama got some alone time to go shopping. Hayes got his alone time to go cycling and running. The bigs got Reenie to themselves for a while. Family bike rides, in which Peter rode mileS on his own bicycle. Playgrounds. Cousin time. Visiting. Introducing Matthew to the Kennedys. Sounds great, right!?
{Record Scratch}
Reenie had offered her babysitting services for Friday night so Hayes and I could enjoy a little local flavor. We made plans to go out with McCall and Jay for dinner, but Hayes fell violently ill that evening. Saturday, the day of Pop's big party and the day we'd finally get to see all the "big cousins," Hayes spent bedridden. The party was on a perfectly mild March day so the kids were able to run and play, grown-ups were able to visit, and Pop got to survey the little kingdom that he and Nanny built. What a privilege that must be to watch three generations down to the three newborns rocking side by side in the den.

Three exhausted boys and one mama later, we headed home to check on the patient. He was feeling better but completely zonked. While Matty napped I took the bigs on a bike ride and explored a piece of the island we hadn't seen before. Dinner was slow, mostly because the boys could hardly keep their eyes open. Bathtime was quick and bedtime was uneventful. Or so we thought. I spent a few hours doing laundry and packing up for a long trip home before collapsing.
I woke with a start Sunday when Hayes busted in the room looking for wipes. Turns out, sweet baby Davis had fallen sick during the night sometime. For those who have spent more than two minutes with this child, you know he is non-stop shenanigans and love. He could barely move and his eyes were sunken in and so sad. Broke our hearts. A bath perked him up momentarily but he fell asleep again while we loaded up. Thank goodness Reenie and Boopah were able to help supervise the morning rush.
Peter went back to school Monday - FINALLY! He was so excited to see his friends again after almost a 2 week break. He even renewed his membership in the no-cavity club yesterday. He ate a great supper, and then woke up at 5:30am having succumbed to this nasty stomach bug as well. Let me take this opportunity to sing the praises of my better half. He was elbow-deep in nastiness this morning but dismissed me and took the reins so I could avoid the germs. We are armed with Gatorade and detergent, and apparently that's all I can deal with today anyway.
So, anyone know where I can rent a haz-mat suit? Or a bubble? We all know mamas can't get sick, and I have a sneaky suspicion that this nasty little bug isn't finished with us yet.
Bad luck aside, I have to mention that the fun we had totally outweighs the yucky parts. We are so lucky to have such fun families and there's no one more responsible than our grandparents. Nothing and nobody is more worthy of a celebration.
