a day in the life

I know, I know.

We don't have a lot of remarkable days in this phase of life. There is the excitement of an occasional lost tooth or finally being a diaper-free house, but nothing like first steps, first teeth, endearing little tidbits of baby bliss...

Today was a remarkable day. A day worthy of remarks. Here's what I have learned since 8am today:

Asking kids to turn off Kindles to complete their morning work is apparently grounds for child emancipation.

Children are deaf to the sound of their own screaming but woe be unto the brother who dares raise his voice within a ten foot radius.

Being told to strip and make one's bed rivals a violation of the Geneva convention so I suggest you "trap" the child under the fitted sheet and hope for the best. The giddiness from such a novel "game" lasts about ten minutes before brothers are jumping on top of him and the screaming and tears begin all over again.

Finally buying two Taylor Swift songs a child has been requesting for weeks means nothing if you don't get the Minecraft winter mod too. Whatever that means.

Telling a child (who refuses to clean up his own messes) that he can't take Legos in the car is grounds for a standoff in the garage, from which he stomps away bemoaning my evil ways. I don't lose a standoff - too much German in me for that.

Having a child look for something in the car at night most definitely results in a dead battery the following morning.

Car key remotes break when thrown down the stairs, even by a preschooler.

Fights among brothers get really rough then after ten minutes they have forgotten, yet I remain offended.

That call you've been waiting on for an urgent appointment will come on the day you are least equipped to make it work - emotionally or "vehicularly."

Seven loads of laundry takes three Friends episodes to fold. On an unrelated note, boys will choose to give Mommy space and play outside for a while longer if it means they don't have to help fold laundry.

Whiskey makes things a little more bearable. Well, one does - two might make things worse.

When a car is jump started, immediately exit the car because habit will make you absentmindedly turn off the ignition, placing you back at square one. Or in my case, square zero.

AAA guys are only there for people's worst moments yet they still show up to work each day.

I married well.
